Peanut Butter and Jelly
Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches are comfort food for me. Poached eggs, too, but that's a whole different post.
For adults of a certain age and certain geographic region there is a memory of a specific kind of peanut butter that can only be found at school. In my case it was elementary school. At my school if you forgot your lunch you could go to the office and get a pass. You give that pass to the lunch lady in the cafeteria and they would give you a peanut butter sandwich (no jelly) and a carton of milk.
The bread was dark; I have no idea what type of grain or brand. I only remember that it was dark brown. The peanut butter, though, tasted unbelievable. Obviously peanut-y, there was something else to the flavor that made it the BEST PEANUT BUTTER in the world. As a grown up I understand that it was some kind of commercial spread, probably came in some industrial sized can and it was probably loaded with sugar. I could never find that taste anywhere else.
I will not admit that I may have, on occasion, "forgotten" my lunch on purpose. You could get in trouble if you forgot to often. But every now and again, I could get the BEST PEANUT BUTTER in the world for lunch. And that was enough to comfort my soul at the early age of 11 or 12.
P.S. I don't really like jelly. I use Raspberry Jam on my PB&J. With the crust on.
